In the 1880's, the Oregon & California Railroad ran through the Bear Creek Valley. The plan was to cross the stream, (in Portland) and start a new town. The first name chosen was Middle Ford. The railroad engineer responsible for getting across the stream, shorten the name to Medford. By 1884 the railroad tracks reach Medford and around that time they started a new school district. On February 24, 1885, Medford was incorporated as a town. Since 1955, Medford has operated under the Council-Manager form of government.
It has taken only 110 years for Medford to grow from a small town with unpaved roads to the largest city in Southern Oregon and the seat of Jackson County Government. Medford once primarily depended on timber and agriculture for sources of income. Now... Medford is a thriving trade center with a growing residential population.
In the 1950's, Medford was divided by the construction of a main interstate, I-5. The downtown and inner neighborhoods are on the west and the more affluent neighborhoods are on the east. Because of a boom of residential construction in the last decade, Medford is starting to feel the relief of urban decay.
